The
Seajacks
Scylla has arrived at Belfast
Habour ahead of its work on DONG Energy's
Walney
Extension offshore wind farm off
the west coast of the UK. The vessel is lined up for the installation of
turbines at the site.
Turbine components and foundations are being stored in Belfast and the
construction is being coordinated from the port of Barrow in Furness which
already hosts the operating and maintenance teams for three other DONG
Energy offshore wind farms,
Barrow,
Walney and
West
of Duddon Sands.
The wind farm is being implemented across two phases with MHI Vestas Offshore
Wind set to supply 40
V164-8.0
MW turbines for installation during
the first phase followed by a further 47 Siemens
SWT-7.0-154
turbines during the second phase.
Installation of the 87 monopile foundations is ongoing with over 40% installed.
The work being carried out by Van Oord's heavy lift vessels
Aeolus
which was supported another of the company's vessel's
Svanen.
The 659MW
Walney
Extension project is located
19km off the coast of Cumbria and sits alongside the existing and operational
Walney
Phase 1 and
Phase
2 offshore wind farms. Once complete,
scheduled for 2019, the project is expected to be capable of meeting the
electricity needs of more than 500,000 UK homes.
