SgurrEnergy attended the official opening ceremony of the 288MW Butendiek offshore wind farm held earlier this month. The company has been involved in the German offshore wind farm since 2011 and has completed construction monitoring services on behalf of the project lenders.

The Butendiek wind farm, located approximately 32 km west of the German island of Sylt, was developed by wpd AG and comprises of 80 SWT-3.6-120 Siemens 3.6MW. The 288MW offshore wind farm has had one of the fastest construction periods of German offshore wind farm, with completion of construction works in under 18 months.

SgurrEnergy was contracted by the kfw IPEX-Bank to carry out pre-financial close technical advisory services, through to construction monitoring activities on behalf of the project lenders. During the construction phase, SgurrEnergy’s scope included reporting to the project lenders on construction progress, programme and budget reviews, as well as on site monitoring of progress through visits to onshore and offshore construction sites.

SgurrEnergy’s Kevin Murphy, Project Manager, said:
“We would like to congratulate all of the team at wpd AG on achieving this significant milestone. We’ve been involved in the project since the financing process began and it’s great to have been able to attend the official opening to see the project now operational, just four years later. The successful execution of this project is testament to the hard work of wpd AG and we look forward to working with them in the future.”

WPD AG’s Eckhard Stürtz, responsible for project financing and controlling of
Butendiek, said: “The opening is a very important milestone for Butendiek which was achieved by the excellent performance and good cooperation of all partners involved. We are very grateful for the support by SgurrEnergy over the last four years.”

The Glasgow-based consultancy also fulfilled a similar role for the Trianel Wind Farm Borkum. The SgurrEnergy team began working on the project in 2009. With Trianel being declared open the group will continue to advise the lenders throughout the early stages of operation as it moves into the next phase of operations monitoring.

Sgurr renewable energy consultancy, provides engineering and technical advisory services in onshore and offshore wind, solar, wave and tidal and hydro projects. Founded 13 years ago by technical director Ian Irvine and implementation director Steve McDonald, the company has been involved in more than 160GW of renewable energy projects in over 90 countries around the world.
