SgurrEnergy, has been appointed by Huaneng Renewables Corp Ltd, a Chinese based renewable energy company, to undertake technical offshore wind energy research assessing the general site conditions of offshore wind projects in China.

Conducted in partnership with Beijing based Tsinghua University, the study will explore wake model parameters. The aim of the study is to improve wake model performance during the pre-construction phase of wind farm projects as well as examining the level of impact site conditions have on wind turbine performance and availability. The results of the research will allow developers to choose more suitable site locations and, as a result, improve overall wind farm performance.

SgurrEnergy  was appointed to Huaneng’s offshore wind research programme in December 2014. The programme came as a result of a Chinese government drive to build technical knowledge in a number of key areas for the fast growing offshore wind market. These areas include assessment of submarine topography and geological conditions, wind farm generator capacity and site accessibility issues.

Further to this the company have also acted as technical advisor on behalf project lenders during the financing and construction monitoring phases of the 200MW Trianel Wind Farm Borkum. The SgurrEnergy team began working on the project in 2009 and has been carrying out construction monitoring activities since the summer of 2011. The company’s technical advisor scope included monthly reporting to the project lenders on construction progress, programme and budget reviews, as well as on-site monitoring of progress through site visits.

SgurrEnergy’s James Wu, Director of Technical Services in China, said: “We are delighted to be part of this important offshore wind research project with two highly respected organisations. Our work with Tsinghua University and Huaneng Renewables will offer new insight into an important area for offshore wind and we look forward to sharing the results of this study.”

Huaneng Renewables’ Dr Guo, Project Manager, said: “We consider this research project to be of upmost importance to Huaneng Renewables. Offshore wind research is an exciting new area of study in China and we look forward to the findings, with the help of SgurrEnergy and Tsinghua University, which will increase industry knowledge considerably in China.”

SgurrEnergy, a subsidiary of the Wood Group, was founded 13 years ago by technical director Ian Irvine and implementation director Steve McDonald. According to the company they have been involved in more than 160GW of renewable energy projects in over 90 countries around the world.
