Siemens Gamesa selected for Belgian projects

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (Siemens Gamesa) has been selected as preferred turbine supplier for the Mermaid and Seastar offshore wind farms off the coast of Belgium.

The parties will continue contract negotiations with the aim to reach an agreement on the terms and conditions of a turbine supply contract and a long term service and maintenance contract before the summer of 2018.

Mermaid and Seastar are still subject to completion of the ongoing negotiations and regulatory approvals between the developers and the Belgian Government. A subsidy support price of €79/MWh was recently negotiated for the projects.

"We are pleased to do this announcement as this will trigger a sequence of events that will eventually lead up to the construction of two offshore wind farms with a total capacity of ca. 500 MW. In order to reach project completion by 2020 the support mechanism announced by the government still has to be transposed into legislation, but we are confident the Belgian government will do its utmost to make this happen in the next weeks based on the principles agreed in October 2017,"commented Mathias Verkest CEO of Mermaid THV.

The two projects will comprise of 58 Siemens Gamesa turbines, with a rotor diameter of 167m, mounted on monopile foundations. They will connect to two offshore substations and power will be exported to shore via ELIA’s Modular Offshore Grid. Combined, the projects are expected to provide electricity for up to 485,000 households. Ostend will serve as offshore hub for both projects which are expected to be operational from 2020.

Seastar is under development by the Otary consortium, consisting of various Belgian specialists in renewable energy including investment and development companies.

Mermaid is a partnership between Otary NV and Electrabel NV with both parties contributing to the development of the Mermaid offshore wind farm.
