Simon Stevin readies for Riffgrund 2
Jan De Nul
Jan De Nul Group’s fall pipe vessel Simon Stevin arrived at the Visnes Eklogitt quarry in Norway for the load-out of the first batch of rock for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm in Germany.

This load of 32,000 tonnes is the first of four to be loaded, transported and installed by the Simon Stevin. The last three batches will be provided by the Rekefjord quarry and loaded in Eemshaven, Netherlands, closer to the wind farm site.

The vessel will install scour protection layers onto the seabed for the 36 wind turbine foundations. In 2018 another of Jan De Nul's vessels, Vole au vent, will start installing the monopile foundations at the wind farm.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 is located 54km off the coast of Lower Saxony next to another of DONG's wind farms, Borkum Riffgrund 1. The project will feature 56 MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbines, each with a 8MW capacity, covering an area of 36km2. Installation works are scheduled to commence in the first half of 2018 with full commissioning expected by the end of 2019. Once operational, it is expected to meet the energy demands of 460,000 German households.
