Smit Salvage to drain SEA WORKER

After the grounding of SEA WORKER on 27 January and the following capsizing on 3 February, A2SEA and the salvage team from Smit Salvage have been waiting on weather to be able to inspect and remove the diesel oil from the barge.

A2SEA stated that yesterday, a team of divers successfully inspected the barge, and today divers have prepared to mount the equipment to remove the diesel oil. There were concerns that such substances would pose a threat to the surrounding environment. Smit Salvage is expecting to begin the removal later today.

The vessel broke away from its tow line last month during extreme weather conditions whilst in transit to the Port of  Esbjerg. She ended up being grounded and investigations revealed that the jacking system was damaged.

The vessel then capsized off the coast of Nymindegab, Denmark and was monitored by Danish coastal authorities.

SEA WORKER was a jack-up barge equipped to operate in the offshore wind sector. It had a 400t offshore crane, and has been used to install a wide range of equipment such as monopiles, transition pieces and offshore wind turbines. SEA WORKER is 55.5m in length with a breadth of 32.20m with the capability of rising some 40m above the water surface on 73m long legs. This vessel was fitted with a state-of-the-art LPS system (Leg Penetration System) and had air-cooled jacking and auxiliary engines, enabling her to operate on sites that dry out at low tide.
