SPT Offshore designs foundations

SPT offshoreSPT Offshore (SPT) is currently engaged in a project to perform research and consulting works for wind turbine suction foundation designs for two offshore wind projects in China.

The wind farms are located approximately 10 to 30 miles from shore, and the water depth maximum ranges from 15m to 30m.

SPT Offshore's scope includes the preparation of a conceptual design for each of the projects applying its Suction Pile Jacket (SPJ) foundations. It claims the soil at each of the sites consists of soft clays and is well suited for SPJs.

Last year SPT Offshore secured two contracts from Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) for foundations to be used on wind farms off the coast of the UK.

One of the contracts sees SPT Offshore tasked with the installation of 174 suction pile foundations for the 58 suction bucket jackets at DONG Energy's
Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm. The jackets will support 58 of the total 174 Siemens' SWT-7.0-154 turbines at the site.

The second contract concerns the detailed design and installation of 33 suction pile foundations for the foundation of eleven suction bucket jackets for the
Aberdeen offshore wind farm, a Vattenfall project. The jackets will support the 11 MHI Vestas V164-8.0MW turbines on site.

In a separate contract announcement, SPT informed that it has completed the preliminary design of a three-legged jacket, including the suction pile foundation, for an undisclosed offshore wind farm project off the east coast of Scotland. The wind farm is located 30 – 55 km offshore and the water depth across the site varies between 30-60m. The seabed consists of strong clays over bedrock and is ideally suited for suction pile founded jackets.
