TenneT start tender process for offshore substations and marine cables

TenneT has launched the so-called accreditation schemes for market players who will qualify to be allowed to subscribe to TenneT's bids for the five offshore substations and five submarine cable systems: two Borssele, two Dutch South coast and one on the North Dutch coast. The first tenders relate Borssele Alpha and Beta. These European tenders will be opened in early 2016.

The Borssele cables will come ashore at Borssele, less than one kilometre from TenneT's existing 380 kV substation. The company previously have stated that "This is the outcome of an intensive process, in which all interests are identified and weighted. The Ministries of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure & Environment ultimately determine the final route of the cables."

The substations will each be of 700 MW.

Through a pre-qualification system the applicants - on the basis of clearly defined conditions - pre-qualify, so that a short list of those parties who may participate will be formed ready for Invitation to Tender in early 2016. Furthermore, in order for TenneT to develop a Dutch North Sea Grid three other offshore grid connections ready to connect future offshore wind farms will be tendered. The requirements: five standardised substations of 700 MW connecting a total of 3450 MW of offshore wind (agreed in the Dutch Energy Agreement) will be realised by 2023.
