Offshore grid highway BorWin2 supports energy with a capacity of 800 megawatts

Transmission Grid operator TenneT begins the new year with a major expansion of transmission capacity for wind energy at sea. The offshore connection BorWin2 TenneT is operational from today for transmission from the German North Sea electricity cluster to the grid on land.

BorWin2 makes an essential contribution to the energy; the capacity of 800 megawatts (MW) can provide around one million households with electricity. TenneT now reached a milestone in the realisation of the plans of the German government for expanding offshore capacity. With BorWin2 there are now four offshore grid connections providing with a total capacity of approximately 1,400 MW. In addition, there are a further eight offshore areas under construction. Two of them will be completed in the coming period.

TenneT expects that between now and 2019, a total of more than 7,100 MW of connection capacity for wind farms will be realised at the German North Sea. TenneT has therefore exceeded the requirements necessary to meet the expansion goals of the German government, namely 6,500 MW by 2020.

High capacity of new offshore connections
BorWin2 is the first of four (offshore) grid connections in this capacity category, the coming period, of which there are two more will be delivered. In addition, this is the first system where more than one offshore wind farm is connected to.  Prior to the completion is first piloted several weeks. In this phase could all wind energy from the wind farm Global Tech I brought ashore. Further, the half of the connection capacity is reserved for the wind farm.
