UlsteinUlstein Verft has delivered the second Service Operations Vessel (SOV) to Bernhard Schulte Offshore and ICBC Leasing. The vessel was named Windea Leibniz today at a ceremony in Ulsteinvik, Norway.

The vessel carries the name of the German mathematician, philosopher and physicist Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, who in the 17th century proposed to use wind power to operate pumps.

“Once again, Ulstein Verft proves the ability to deliver state-of-the-art vessels to the agreed time. We look forward to seeing the vessel at work, and hear the feedback of her results when operating in the renewable market,”
says managing director Kristian Sætre at Ulstein Verft.

Starting from April, the vessel will begin its work at the Sandbank wind farm in the German Bight under a long-term charter with Siemens Wind Power to service the 72 SWT-4.0-130 turbines on site. It has been designed to act as a platform to accommodate and transport and technicians during maintenance operations at the site.

“The vessel has the X-STERN™ hull shape, which allows it to be positioned with the stern faced towards the weather instead of the bow only”,
said Matthias Müller, Managing Director of Bernhard Schulte Offshore. He continued: “Her award-winning sister vessel ‘Windea La Cour’, which is working in the Dutch Gemini wind farm since August, has already proven that this leads to improved weather resilience, greater operability and reduced power and fuel consumption while on DP mode next to the wind turbine.”

The total investment for the Sandbank offshore wind farm amounts to around EUR 1.2bn (GBP 916m). Vattenfall owns 51% in the project with Stadtwerke München (SWM) holding the remainder. All of the turbines are in place and the array was put into operation on 25th January 206, three months of schedule. It is expected to supply enough electricity to supply 400,000 German households annually.

The first SOV, Windea la cour, was delivered to Siemens in August 2016 . It began service on the 600MW Gemini wind farm in the Netherlands on the 1st September.
