Vattenfall, the European energy company, has strengthened the senior management team of its growing wind business with the appointment of Michael Simmelsgaard as Vice President of Strategic Projects.

On 1 October Simmelsgaard will be new Vice President of Strategic Projects as well as a member of the Management Team at Business Area Wind. He has a strong track record in the energy industry and most recently he was DONG’s Vice President for its Wind Operations business.

Simmelsgaard said:
“I am very excited to join Vattenfall and its great team of engaged and competent people and being part of transforming  the Vattenfall Group  to an even more renewable agenda.”

Gunnar Groebler, Head of Business Area Wind, said:
“The purpose for bringing Michael on board is to accelerate our development in key strategic areas and increase our senior competence in wind, which is a crucial factor for Vattenfall going forward. Together with the Management Team and all our employees, Michael will play an essential role in realizing our ambitious plans in the Wind area.”

Last year Vattenfall’s President and CEO, Magnus Hall, reorganised the Swedish owned utility and created a new division - Business Area Wind - to deliver on the energy firm’s strategic priority to grow its wind business across the UK, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Vattenfall completed the construction of the Kentish Flats Extension project (KFE) during August this year. The offshore construction of KFE started in May 8km off Herne Bay and Whitstable on the Kent coast. Over a twelve month period KFE is expected to generate enough power to meet the annual electricity demand of around 35,000 UK households. The project has a maximum capacity of 49.5MW, this is generated from 15 V1236-3.3 Vestas offshore wind turbines. The project is an extension of the existing 90MW Kentish Flats offshore wind farm.

In more recent news, inter array cabling started at Vattenfall's and Stadtwerke München's Sandbank offshore wind farm in September. The first power cables are being installed between the monopiles “SB 28C” and “SB 29C”. The investment costs for the Sandbank offshore wind farm are around EUR 1.2 billion. Vattenfall holds a 51% stake in Sandbank Offshore Wind GmbH, which was set up to implement the project, while Stadtwerke München's holds a 49% stake.
