Jan De Nul's jack-up installation vessel Vole au Vent has arrived on the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm for the installation of foundations. It was loaded out with monopiles and transition pieces in Eemshaven last week.

A total of 36 monopiles foundations will be installed at the site, each consisting of a monopile, transition piece and anode cage. Manufactured by Steelwind in Nordenham, the components are being shipped to Eemshaven by Wagenborg.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 will also include 20 jacket foundations featuring suction bucket technology. During installation, the vessel will lower the foundations onto the seabed, where the buckets are used to create negative pressure and attach the foundation to the ground.

The suction buckets are designed to reduce noise emissions and help protect the surrounding sea life. The technology was first tested by Ørsted at the Borkum Riffgrund 1 site, situated nearby Borkum Riffgrund 2.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 is owned by Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners and will feature 56 MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbines with full commissioning expected by the end of 2019.

The wind turbine array will be one of the largest in Germany with a capacity of 450MW. it is expected to supply electricity to up to 460,000 households per year.
