Vole au Vent fitted with pile driver

Jan De Nul’s jack-up vessel Vole au Vent has been fitted with an IHC IQIP hydraulic pile driver for the installation of monopiles at the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm. The installation of the pile driver was completed in Eemshaven by Jan De Nul, Wagenborg Nedlift and IHC IQIP.

The equipment was been assembled in Beatrixkade over the past few months and is designed to help mitigate noise pollution, a factor of pile driving for monopile installation offshore.

The vessel recently left a shipyard in Poland after undergoing several modifications in preparation for work at the German project. The deck of the vessel has been re-arranged to create more free space and make use of the crane's 1,500 tonnes capacity. Specific sea fastenings have also been installed on board to transport and install the monopiles and transition pieces.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 is owned by Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners and is located next to Borkum Riffgrund 1. The project will feature 56 MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbines, covering an area of 36km², mounted on 36 monopile foundations and 20 suction bucket jacket foundations.

When commissioned in 2019, it will be one of the largest offshore-wind power plants in Germany with a capacity of 450MW. It is expected to supply electricity to up to 460,000 households per year.
