"21st century solutions for 21st century equipment": CORROSION calls for eco-friendly foundation protection

Offshore wind turbine foundations rest deep in the world’s oceans and can experience corrosion. Does the industry need more sustainable solutions for these problems? CORROSION, a supplier of anti-corrosion and anti-fouling solutions, believes so, and has launched an awareness-raising campaign.

“Few people realize that many offshore wind farms are far more eco-friendly above water than below it,” said Niels Ros, Manager Offshore Wind at CORROSION. “The traditional method to protect these structures, dates back to the 19^th century and discharges huge quantities of metals and heavy metals into the seawater.”

The new campaign highlights the benefits of impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems over and above the traditional galvanic anode cathodic protection (GACP) approach. CORROSION has been utilizing ICCP technology to protect turbine foundations for many years now – dating back as far as 2007. “ICCP systems provide all the protection that wind farm foundations need, but without polluting marine environments”, said Ros. “What’s more, they have a far smaller carbon footprint than traditional protection methods.”

The campaign will continue with engagement activities involving politicians and marine environmental organizations, and virtual industry events where the media will be invited. “With global offshore wind capacity projected to increase fifteen-fold in the next two decades, we believe in 21^st century solutions for 21^st century equipment,” Ros told the media.
