Ørsted has announced that the 12 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) pilot project, 27 miles off Virginia Beach, along the US east coast, is now delivering power to the grid.

CVOW is one of the first offshore wind farms to be approved by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and installed in federal waters. It was built by Ørsted, one of the largest offshore wind developers in the world, on behalf of Dominion Energy, an American power and energy company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Ørsted served as offshore engineering, procurement and construction lead for the project.

The pilot project was first announced three years ago and received Virginia State Corporation Commission approval in November 2018. It features two
SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines mounted on jacket foundations. Construction kicked off onshore in July 2019 with foundation installation following in May this year. Construction was completed throughout the pandemic.

Dominion Energy plans to install a massive 2,640 MW offshore wind development off the Virginia coastline. The
CVOW commercial scale project is located in the 112,800 acre area Dominion Energy currently is leasing from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The first phase of the build out is expected support initial generation of wind energy by 2024. Additional phases are scheduled to come online in 2025 and 2026.
