Denmark sets wind energy record

Wind energy in Denmark set a new power production record during 2019 covering 46.9 percent electricity demand from Danish households. It tops 2017 which saw wind energy cover 43.4 percent of electricity demand.

The total production from the Danish wind turbines was 16.0 TWh against 13.9 TWh in 2018, ie. an increase of 15 per cent. The previous record for the annual energy production from the wind turbines in Denmark is from 2017, when energy production reached 14.8 TWh.

“2019 appears to be an average wind year, but Horns Rev 3 of 407 MW was connected to the grid, which is why we now see a big leap in the production of green power from wind turbines. This is really gratifying and we are approaching a milestone with fast paces where wind turbines cover half our electricity consumption on average. I expect this to happen during 2020 or by 2021, when the next 600 MW offshore wind farm Krigers Flak is expected to be operational,” says Jan Hylleberg, CEO of trade organisation Wind Denmark.

“Denmark is, by comparison, world champions in balancing large quantities of wind energy. However, the 2020s will be the decade when we will really start to put the green power into use in our heating and transport, and not least for the production of green fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia,” says added Hylleberg.

The price for wind energy in Denmark fell in 2019 compared with 2018 by 12.7 percent. Measured on average from 30.3 øre / kWh to 26.5 øre / kWh. Wind Denmark stated that this development is partly due to the wet weather in 2019 and a higher water level in the Nordic water reservoirs compared to 2018.

“Despite a fall in settlement prices for the Danish wind turbines, the level is still higher than in the years 2014-2017 and the decrease is offset to some extent by the higher production in 2019 of 15 per cent, so 2019 must be regarded as a good year for the Danish wind turbines, ” concluded Jan Hylleberg.
