Finland discusses new wind farm

A Finnish municipality has introduced plans for a new offshore wind farm. Metsähallitus, a state-owned enterprise which manages and protects state-owned land and water areas in Finland, has proposed building a state owned offshore wind farm in the Korsnäs municipality, Ostrobothnia region, Finland.

"Metsähallitus' goal is to multiply the wind power capacity in the state's areas by 2030"
, said Metsähallitus' head of wind power, Otto Swanljung . "The implementation of Korsnäs offshore wind farm would mean a huge vitamin injection for Korsnäs municipality and also for the entire Vasa region's economy."

Christina Båssar, Korsnäs' municipal director, has said: "the municipality is positive about the initiative. The implementation of a project for an offshore wind farm would mean a new opportunity for Korsnäs municipality."

An offshore wind farm could finally cover the gap caused by the closure of Outokumpu's mine in the 1970s. "It would provide jobs and residents as well as contractor opportunities for construction and thereby tax revenue", Båssar added.

Korsnäs' municipal board will consider the planning initiative at its meeting on 23rd November. If the initiative is approved, this will be the starting point for extensive investigative work.

"We want to act as openly as possible within the project and hear the opinion of the locals"
, said Metsähallitus' project manager for wind power operations Pertti Tapio. " The locals are certainly interested in where the power line will go and how the wind turbines will be visible on the coast and if a flashing light occurs. We will sort out these questions and many others and describe them as well as possible."

The project will retain state ownership throughout its life cycle and the area will continue to be open for fisheries.

The project would help meet regional climate goals. The Ostrobothnian Federation's climate programme is climate-neutral electricity and heat production as well as traffic by 2040. Finland also aims to become the world's first fossil - free welfare state by 2035.
