First power for WindFloat Atlantic

Developers of WindFloat Atlantic have taken another step towards completion with the production of first power. The turbine was successfully connected to the grid on 31st December 2019.

Furthermore, the second of the three platforms has left the Port of Ferrol for its final destination, 20 km off the coast of Portugal at Viana do Castelo. Upon arrival to the project site, it will be installed next to the first floating platform, which departed Ferrol back in October and was grid-connected in early December.

The structure, which has set off from the outer harbour of Ferrol, comprises a floating platform and the largest wind turbine ever installed on a floating structure. The platform measures 30 metres in height and with a 50 metre distance between each column.

The WindFloat Atlantic project will feature three MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbines, each with a capacity of 8.33 MW, mounted on Principle Power’s floating semi-submersible platforms. The project is owned by the Windplus consortium, which is consists of EDP Renováveis (54.4%), ENGIE (25%), Repsol (19.4%) and Principle Power Inc. (1.2%). The platforms are being built in cooperation between the two countries on the Iberian peninsula: two of them were manufactured at the Setúbal shipyards (Portugal), and the third at Avilés and Ferrol shipyards (Spain).

The floating technology was implemented in a first of its kind prototype, WindFloat 1, near Póvoa do Varzim, which was installed back in 2011. The project was a full life cycle demonstration featuring a Vestas V-80 2 MW turbine, and was decommissioned last year.

A commercial phase of approximately 30 turbines producing 150 MW is planned to follow 25 MW project. The WindFloat foundation is also due to be deployed at the Golfe du Lion project in the Mediterranean. The project developers anticipate reaching consent this summer, with commercial operations starting in 2021.
