Phase 2 of the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm off the coast of Taiwan has officially started commercial operations. According to project shareholder JERA, commercial operations began on 27 December 2019.

Formosa 1 is located around 6 kilometres off the west coast of the Miaoli district in the Taiwan Strait, in water depths ranging between 15 and 30 metres, and was completed across two phases. The total power generation capacity for both phases is 128 MW, which is expected to meet the power demand of 128,000 households in Taiwan.

Phase 1
of the project consists of two Siemens 4 MW demonstration turbines, which were installed in 2016, making this the first offshore wind project in Taiwanese waters. The wind farm is owned by Formosa 1 Wind Power Co. Ltd., a partnership of Ørsted (35%), JERA (32.5%), Macquarie Capital (25%) and Swancor Holding (7.5%).

Phase 2
saw the addition of a further 20 Siemens Gamesa SWT-6.0-154 turbines, with a total output of 120 MW. Construction of Phase 2 began at the end of May 2019, with the first foundation and monopile installed by Seaway 7's heavy lift crane vessel Seaway Yudin. Jan De Nul's cable lay vessel Willem de Vlamingh supported that installation of array cable and export cable. Seajacks' jack-up installation Seajacks Zaratan was deployed for the installation of turbines which was completed on 9th October 2019.
