Hydroniq to supply Nexans Aurora cooling system

Aalesund-based Hydroniq Coolers has been commissioned to supply its patented Pleat seawater cooling system for the cable installation vessel Nexans Aurora. The Pleat coolers will provide cooling of the vessel’s main engine and auxiliary systems through the use of seawater. Hydroniq Coolers has not disclosed the value of the contract.

The
Nexans Aurorais currently under construction at Crist Shipyard in Poland and will be outfitted for power cable laying, including bundle laying, cable jointing, repair, cable system protection and trenching. Engineering, outfitting and system integration, equipment preparations, testing, sea trials and finalising will be carried out at Ulstein Verft, Norway.

It is to be equipped with dynamic positioning 3 and a 10,000 ton capacity, split turntable. Its design is the result of a combination of input from Nexans, Skipsteknisk, Ulstein Verft and MAATS Tech. It is to measure 31 metres wide, 149.9 metres long, with a deadweight of 17,000 tonnes, and she will be capable of accommodating 90 people. The vessel scheduled to be delivered in 2021.

Hydroniq Coolers will deliver its Pleat is a module-based titanium cooler for seawater to freshwater, with design pressure six bars and design temperature of 0-95°C. Marine cooling systems are utilised to reduce temperatures in the ship’s engines and other auxiliary systems through use of seawater to avoid overheating of the engine and other critical systems. Hydroniq Coolers will manufacture at assemble the Pleat cooler at its headquarters in Aalesund, Norway, and deliver it to Ulstein Verft in Ulsteinvik, Norway.

Further, one crew member can easily maintain and clean the Pleat within one hour, because compared to a traditional heat exchangers one Pleat cooling element is equal to approximately 15 plates,”
