MODEC, Inc. (MODEC), Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. (Toyo Construction) and Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Furukawa Electric) have announced that a floating offshore wind Research and Development (R&D) proposal has been approved by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in Japan. On 30th October 2020, MODEC, Toyo Construction and Furukawa Electric signed a contract with NEDO related to R&D.

This R&D proposal aims at reducing the overall cost of floating offhsore wind turbines by adopting tension leg platforms (TLP) instead of catenary mooring. Taking advantage of TLP stability, MODEC, Toyo Construction and Furukawa Electric aim to develop a low-cost next-generation platform and mooring system with structural reliability required for a floater to be mounted with a large capacity wind turbine of over 10 MW. In addition, compared to catenary mooring, the area occupied by mooring lines in the sea can be significantly smaller, so the negative impact on fisheries and ship operations can be minimised.

This R&D will be carried out over two years, until March 2022. TLP R&D, including mooring systems, will be conducted by MODEC, mooring foundation design and offshore construction is the responsibility of  Toyo Construction, and subsea power transmission system R&D will be conducted by Furukawa Electric.
