Ocean Winds bolstering UK team

Ocean Winds (OW) is launching a new batch of job opportunities to support existing and new offshore wind projects in the UK.

Recruitment for the operations and maintenance (O&M) phase of the Moray East offshore wind farm is ramping up for over 20 new posts, including apprenticeships. These posts will be in addition to the approximately 60 posts that the wind turbine supplier has indicated will be needed to service the wind turbines.

The construction teams will hand over to the O&M team in 2022, but recruitment is needed now to build and train the team so that there is full capability at handover. The existing marine co-ordination team in Fraserburgh will become part of the wider O&M team as the construction of a new facility at the harbour allows all Fraserburgh based staff to work from the same purpose-built facility.

In addition to growth in Fraserburgh, OW is increasing its recruiting at the UK headquarters in Edinburgh. The office hosts over 140 staff, working across
Moray East, Moray West and new opportunities. It was first opened in 2010, when OW secured Zone 1 in the Moray Firth of the Round 3 leasing. Since securing a Contract for Difference in 2017 the Edinburgh team has grown from close to 40 to the current 140. From a team of 30 at the beginning of 2021 dedicated to the Moray West project there are currently circa 10 vacancies being filled.

Although Covid has meant that most staff are remote working, the recruitment process has continued including eight interns in 2020 and another eight being sought currently. Repeat attendance by OW at the upcoming Graduate Jobs Fair of a Scottish university is expected to create interest again in these roles. The internship programme aims to assist young professionals gain an insight and understanding of the variety of roles needed to drive the sector to deliver the ambitious targets for offshore wind in the Offshore Wind Sector Deal, on the road to Net Zero. Additionally, OW has also just launched the graduate recruitment programme for 2021, with international placements for the 15 selected graduates.

Dan Finch, OW UK Director commented: “I am delighted that we are growing the recruitment for the O&M phase of Moray East, currently Scotland’s largest infrastructure project. The lead in to the O&M phase will see a new part of the team growing around our state-of-the-art base in Fraserburgh. Despite the challenges caused by COVID-19 this recruitment is in addition to ongoing recruitment in the Edinburgh office as the projects mature and we prepare for new projects. This is good news for Scottish jobs and demonstrates the positive impact that our offshore wind farms are having in Scotland’s capital city and coastal communities.

"I am confident that we’ll secure further projects through the ScotWind leasing round that will require additional recruitment to develop those new projects and ultimately new O&M teams based in relevant ports. With the right government signals through the next CfD auction and as part of the post-COVID-19 Green Recovery we are ready to bring the necessary large amounts of private funding to deliver a pipeline of major energy infrastructure projects that will help deliver Net Zero as well as jobs and a range of local socio-economic benefits. Moray West is primed and ready. Success in ScotWind will ensure our track record of positive impact in Scotland can be accelerated.”
