Osprey Group scores Moray East cable storage contract

British company Osprey Group has secured a contract with the Port of Sunderland to provide storage solutions for NKT cabling that will be used for the Moray East offshore wind farm.

The cables will be stored at a base at Endurance Park, Port of Sunderland on giant spools, before being transported to Moray East. Osprey Group will receive and store approximately 2,500m of submarine cable and approximately 1,500m of HDD cable in total. Local contractors have been hired to help support the contract.

The cables will be received from the NKT’s cable laying vessel NKT Victoria in Q4 2020. A powered quadrant and Osprey’s Self-Propelled Modular Transporters will be used to load the cable into the basket at the Port of Sunderland. It will be stored for there for at least two years.

Pete Fletcher, Osprey's Director, said: “These cabling baskets are a specialist item, we get them built to our own design. For this contract, we’ve been working with fabricators JW Colpitts, and the Port of Sunderland. It’s rewarding to know that we can be successful in being awarded work in the renewables market partnering with local businesses and offering local content skills.”

We look forward to developing a strong partnership with the team there, as well as Moray East Offshore Windfarm, and we’re sure this is the start of what will be a mutually beneficial relationship as this significant offshore base is developed.”

Located 22 km off the coast of Scotland, the 950 MW Moray East project is the first of two wind farms to be developed in the Outer Moray Firth Zone. Development is being led by a joint venture between Diamond Green Limited (33.4%), EDPR (33.3 %), ENGIE (23.3%) and CTG (10%). The project secured a Contract for Difference of £57.50/MWh from the UK Government in 2017. Work started on its construction in May 2019. Installation of the 100 MHI Vestas V164-9.5 MW turbines will start in early 2021, with full commissioning expected in 2022.
