SGRE scores 2.6 GW supply agreement

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has been identified as preferred turbine supplier for the 2,640 MW Dominion Energy Virginia Offshore Wind project in the USA. The service also includes a long-term service and maintenance agreement for the site located off the coast of Virginia.

The final number of units and turbine model remain to be determined. All installations are expected to complete by 2026. The agreement is subject to certain conditions including Dominion Energy’s final investment decision, governmental permitting, and other required approvals.

“Signing this preferred supplier agreement with Dominion Energy attests to the enormously exciting growth taking place in the US offshore wind industry and across the globe. We’re thrilled to have been chosen to support them in their commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to once again do our part in combatting climate change on a global level,” states Markus Tacke, Siemens Gamesa CEO.

Dominion Energy stated that the turbine agreement provides support certain early works to support project development, including turbine layouts which will be used in the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) submittal to the United States Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in late 2020.

If approved, the project would be located in the 112,800 acres Dominion Energy currently is leasing from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The project is expected to be capable of providing enough clean energy to power 650,000. The first phase of the build out will support initial generation of wind energy by 2024. Additional phases will come online in 2025 and 2026.

"Offshore wind is an excellent renewable energy source and this filing with PJM shows how serious we are about bringing commercial-scale offshore wind to Virginia, giving our customers what they have asked for – more renewable energy," said Mark D. Mitchell, vice president of generation construction. "Governor Ralph Northam has made it clear Virginia is committed to leading the way in offshore wind. We are rising to this challenge with this 2,600 megawatt commercial offshore wind development."

Last year, Dominion Energy formally began construction of the Coastal Virginia. It is fully permitted for operation in US federal waters and the 12 MW project is to be constructed by Danish offshore wind giant Ørsted. It is located in a federal lease area about 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach.
