ØrstedOn 1st June 2018, the first of 20 Suction Bucket Jackets (SBJ) was installed in the offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund II.

"Already in 2014, we were able to install and successfully test the first prototype of a Suction Bucket Jacket in our Borkum Riffgrund I wind farm. The second installation is the next step to further establish this foundation shape in our industry. This development illustrates the competitiveness and sustainability of offshore wind,"
says Volker Malmen, Managing Director of Ørsted in Germany.

"We are glad that the installation starts now. It was a time-consuming preparation and hard work to that point. Our strong team did an excellent job and mastered even difficult challenges. This created the ideal conditions for this next step. Now we want to make sure that the installation is done well,"
says Peter Buhl, SBJ Foundation project manager of Ørsted.

The Belgian company GeoSea is responsible for installing the 20 foundations, each more than 50 meters high and weighing 950 tons. The builder-ship innovation performs the installation. "We are pleased to be working with Ørsted again and proud to have successfully installed the first foundation. Now it's up to us to make sure the complex installation goes as smoothly as possible," says Glenn Carton, project manager for GeoSea.

The 20 jackets were manufactured by ST3 Offshore in the Polish city of Szczecin. The British manufacturer Harland and Wolff was responsible for the production of the cup foundations, of which eleven sets of three cups each were produced in Lübeck and a further nine sets in Belfast.

For the final assembly, Ørsted set up a production facility in the port of Cuxhaven (Cuxport). A crane was brought to Cuxhaven to install the jackets onto the cup foundations. The foundations are then shipped to the construction site.

SBJ foundations have been used in the oil and gas industry for many years. Adapted to offshore wind needs, this is a three-legged jacket structure with cup foundations.

After completion, Borkum Riffgrund II will have an export capacity of approximately 450MW. This means that around 460,000 German households can be supplied with green energy. Full commissioning is planned for 2019.
