ABB and Aibel have been selected by SSE Renewables and Equinor to supply high-voltage direct current (HVDC) equipment which will form part of the transmission system to connect offshore wind farms in the Dogger Bank region of the North Sea to the UK transmission network. ABB will supply the HVDC Light converter systems, while Aibel will deliver two HVDC offshore converter platforms.

The projects,
Doggerbank Creyke Beck A, Doggerbank Creyke Beck B, and Doggerbank Teeside A will have a combined capacity of 3.6 GW and are located more than 130 km off the east coast of the UK in the North Sea. The projects are expected to produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 4.5 million UK homes. The project partners estimate that the development will trigger a total capital investment of approximately £9 billion between 2020 and 2026. The project partners are planning to reach a final investment decision for the first project in 2020 and first power generation is planned for 2023.

ABB stated that it is the first ever use of the HVDC technology in the UK’s offshore wind market, and it will supply technology with one of the smallest environmental footprints, due to the compact station design combined with low energy losses.

Aibel is to deliver two converter platforms for the Creyke Beck A and Creyke Beck B projects, with an option for a third platform for the Teesside A project at the same wind farm. Creyke Beck A and B will have a lean design, with a steel jacket structure and no living quarter or helideck. The platforms will normally be unmanned, operated from the shore, and accessed only by Service Operations Vessels.

“This is an important strategic milestone for Aibel. With this award, we confirm our position as a preferred supplier in the European offshore wind segment and strengthen our role in the ongoing energy industry transformation,”
says President and CEO, Mads Andersen.

“Winning the contracts from SSE Renewables and Equinor for the landmark Dogger Bank project underscores ABB’s innovative offshore wind technology and expertise. It also highlights the success of ABB Power Grids’ customer partnerships, both on design optimisation as well as on the business model level,”
said Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Grids business. “ABB is committed to delivering sustainable solutions with pioneering technologies and in the Dogger Bank project we are helping to make offshore wind competitive and thus contributing to a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”
