ABPmer has been commissioned by Galloper Wind Farm Limited to oversee and report the findings of bird surveys. The monitoring and reporting programme began in late 2020 and is due to complete in June 2022.

RWE Renewables, Galloper’s operator and co-owner, is required to undertake two years of bird displacement and disturbance monitoring of the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) facility at Harwich International Port as a requirement of its marine licence. The facility opened in early 2020, to deliver 24/7 management of the offshore wind farm.

Natalie Frost, ABPmer’s Planning and Consents Business Manager, said: “Post-consent monitoring is key to ensure the impact of new developments and activities is as expected, and if not, provides a means to deliver adaptive management.

"A two-year bird survey programme consisting of 80 separate surveys will be undertaken. From this we will prepare and submit monthly and annual reports to the MMO on behalf of RWE Renewables.

The programme will provide evidence of what change, if any, occurs in bird populations due to the O&M facility operating.”

Galloper is a 353 MW offshore wind farm located in the Outer Thames estuary, 30 km off the coast of Suffolk. First power was generated in November 2017, with full generation following in March 2018. The project features 56 SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines and is expected to power over 250,000 homes annually. It is owned by RWE, Siemens Financial Services, Sumitomo Corporation and ESB and a consortium managed by Green Investment Group and Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets.
