Amazon has signed agreements with Shell Energy Europe BV and Eneco to source renewable power from the
Hollandse Kust Noord subsidy-free offshore wind farm being constructed off the coast of the Netherlands. Starting in 2024, Amazon will offtake 250 MW from Shell and 130 MW from Eneco, for a total of 380 MW.

The
Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm is expected to be operational by 2023 with an installed capacity of 759 MW, generating at least 3.3 TWh per year. The wind farm will be located 18.5 km off the Dutch coast, near the town of Egmond aan Zee. Is it being developed by the CrossWind consortium, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco.

“Supplying Amazon with electricity from this offshore wind farm contributes to their net-zero pledge while progressing our own ambition to be a net-zero emissions business by 2050 or sooner,”
said Elisabeth Brinton, Executive Vice President of New Energies at Shell. “We are delighted to continue strengthening our strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) across Shell New Energies. Our collaboration is enabling us to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation.”

“Amazon has a clear climate ambition and we are proud to contribute to this goal by delivering renewable energy generated by the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust Noord. This collaboration enables us to invest in more renewable energy projects and, thus, accelerate the energy transition,”
Kees-Jan Rameau, Chief Strategic Growth Officer Eneco.

The agreements move Amazon closer to its pledge to become net-zero carbon across its business by 2040 and continue its path to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 – five years ahead of its 2030 target.
