The final Siemens Gamesa SWT-6.0-154 turbine for the Arkona offshore wind farm has been installed. A total of 60 turbines now stand at the array.

Installation of the turbines kicked off in July and was carried out using jack-up vessel
SEA CHALLENGER. All turbine components were stored and prepared at the Arkona construction base at the port of Mukran in Sassnitz.

The turbines consist of a 100m long tower, three rotor blades and a nacelle. In total, it weighs just under 1,000 tonnes with the tip of the rotor blades reaching a height of 180m above sea level.

The project team is in the process of commissioning the turbines in preparation for power generation. Parallel to this, the commissioning of the substation and the completion of the connection to the mainland are underway.

The
Arkona project is located 35km northeast of the island of RĂ¼gen and is owned by E.ON and Equinor. The wind farm will have a capacity of 385MW and is expected to be capable of supplying up to 400,000 households with renewable energy from 2019 onwards.

The investment total for the project is estimated to be in the region of  EUR 1.2bn. It is expected to displace up to 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 annually compared to conventionally generated electricity.
