The largest offshore converter station in the world and Asia's first high voltage direct current offshore converter station was officially launched yesterday (8 July 2021).

It has been constructed to support the transfer of electricity from three wind farms, Rudong
H6/H8/H10 in Donghai Sea, with a design capacity of 1100 MW and a DC voltage rating of ±400kV. It was jointly constructed by China General Nuclear Power New Energy and Three Gorges New Energy.

The upper module of the offshore converter station features 7 layers, measuring 89 metres long, 79 metres wide, and 44 metres high. It weighs about 22,000 tons. Construction was officially started in February 2020. It will be installed on a split jacket foundation.

The converter station is expected to be installed in Rudong waters on 16 July 2021.
