Baroness appointed Chair of Carbon Trust

Julia King, Baroness Brown of Cambridge, has been appointed Chair of the Carbon Trust from July 2018. She will take on the role from James Smith, former Chair of Shell UK, who has served in the post since 2011.

In addition to her role at the Carbon Trust, Baroness Brown serves as Deputy Chair of the Committee on Climate Change, the independent, statutory body that advises the UK government and devolved administrations on climate change, chairing its Adaptation Sub-Committee.

Previous leadership roles include a decade spent as the Vice-Chancellor of Aston University, serving as Principal of the Engineering Faculty at Imperial College, London, and a series of senior business and engineering posts at Rolls-Royce plc.

In 2006, she was appointed by the UK government to lead the King Review of low-carbon cars, setting out the evidence base on the vehicle and fuel technologies with the potential to reduce carbon emissions from the road transport sector. Since its publication this has helped shape government policy on the managing the transition to electric vehicles.

Commenting on her appointment, Baroness Brown said: “Since it was established in 2001, the Carbon Trust has been a key player in global efforts to build a low carbon economy, establishing itself as a trusted global brand. I am joining the Carbon Trust at an exciting time as it is becoming increasingly influential in helping businesses, governments and institutions across five continents capture the opportunities in a sustainable low carbon future.

"There is still much more work to be done if we are to deal with the most pressing environmental challenge facing the world. I look forward to working with the team and supporting them in delivering on our critical low carbon mission.”
