BEIS refuses Thanet Extension consent

The Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy has refused development consent for Vattenfall's application to build the
Thanet Extension Offshore Wind Farm.

The
Thanet Extension project was planned to add 340 MW to the capacity of the wind farm, via a maximum of 34 turbines, more than doubling the current capacity. The size of these turbines could be a potential hurdle during the approval process due to the proximity of some of the units to the Kentish shore.

Commenting on the decision, Danielle Lane, UK Country Manager for Vattenfall, said: “Naturally we’re very disappointed by this decision and will consider how we proceed from here. We continue to believe that Thanet Extension would be an important development for the local area, for UK energy security, and for the drive to reduce emissions.”

Vattenfall has been operating the existing
Thanet wind farm, 14 km off Foreness Point, since 2010. At 300 MW, it was the world’s largest offshore wind farm at the time of its realisation back in 2010. The array features 100 Vestas V90-3.0 MW turbines, each with a rated power of 3 MW.

The Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy recently delayed the decision on the Vattenfall's
Norfolk Vanguard offshore wind farm alongside Ørsted's  Hornsea Three project. Originally expected on 1 June, a decision for the applications has been extended to 1 July 2020.
