Blue Gem Wind submits scoping report for second floating project

Blue Gem Wind, the joint venture between Total, one of the world’s largest energy companies, and Simply Blue Energy, has submitted an environmental scoping report for Valorous, a proposed 300 MW floating offshore wind farm.

Valorous is the second floating offshore wind project being progressed by Blue Gem Wind in the Celtic Sea with the proposed site approximately 50 km South West of the Pembrokeshire coastline. This project follows on from Erebus, a 96 MW demonstration project that is already in development.

Mike Scott, Project Managing Director, said: “Blue Gem Wind is progressing its second floating offshore wind stepping stone project in the Celtic Sea. We believe moving from initial demonstration scale projects, to larger early-commercial developments, will help to capture the highest local supply chain content, and maximise knowledge transfer. We look forward to receiving feedback from Natural Resources Wales on the scoping report.”

Blue Gem Wind has submitted an application to the Crown Estate for the Erebus project. It is to have a 96 MW capacity and will be installed in an area with a water depth of 70 metres. The parties are planning to develop the project using Principle Power’s WindFloat technology. WindFloat is a semi-submersible floating foundation with "water entrapment plates" fitted onto the bottom of the three pillars and a static and dynamic ballast system to enable stability.
