Blue Offshore transports 8,000 tonnes of cable

Blue Offshore recently transported 8,000 tonnes of high voltage cable to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, as part of a contract by Van Oord. The company is supporting the development of TenneT’s Hollandse Kust Zuid grid connection projects to be installed off the Dutch coast.

Blue Offshore is executing a contract by Van Oord to supply a full cable transport spread for both the Hollandse Kust (Zuid) Alpha and Beta cable transport campaigns.

For this transport, Blue Offshore mobilised the world’s first certified double basket carrousel barge, with each carrousel carrying approximately 4,000 tonnes of cable. The transport took place from Hellenic Cables in Greece to the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

The 122m long barge, CC Atlantique, has been chartered by Van Oord. Besides two large carousels and the dedicated control systems, all deck engineering, technical crew and complete mobilisation service was provided by Blue Offshore.

In the upcoming phase of the project, the cables will be loaded into Van Oord’s cable lay vessel
Nexus for the installation offshore. A spare cable will be delivered to TenneT in Eemshaven.

TenneT awarded the Van Oord-Hellenic Cables consortium in 2018, to build the connection from land to sea for the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore grid project. The consortium is installing and burying the sea cables crossing the entrance to Europe’s busiest freight port, the port of Rotterdam. The two part project will be completed in 2022:
Alpha (700 MW) in 2021 and Beta (700 MW) in 2022, to transmit electricity generated by offshore wind farms to for 1.6 million households.

The Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind grid project is 22 kilometres off the coast of the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland. Subsea cables will connect two offshore platforms with the Maasvlakte high voltage substation and the Randstad 380 kV South ring. It will transmits energy generated by the
Hollandse Kust Zuid 1&2 and Hollandse Kust Zuid 3 & 4 ashore.
