BOEM schedules New York Bight Auction

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland has revealed plans for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to hold a wind energy auction on 23 Feb 2022, for more than 480,000 acres in the New York Bight. It will be the first offshore wind energy auction under the Biden-Harris Administration.

The New York Bight WEAs are located in an area of shallow waters between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey coast (to the south and west). Leases offered in this sale are expected to result in 5.6-7 GW of offshore wind energy, enough to power nearly 2 million homes. They range between 43,056 and 125,964 acres in size.

The auction will allow offshore wind developers to bid on six lease areas – the most areas ever offered in a single auction – as described in BOEM’s Final Sale Notice. A total of 25 bidders have been deemed legally, technically, and financially qualified to hold a commercial wind lease in the New York Bight.
