The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has scheduled its third Gulf of Mexico Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force meeting on 27 July 2022, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (CST).

The purpose of the meeting is to present the potential areas identified in federal waters offshore the Gulf of Mexico that may be suitable for offshore renewable energy development, and this task force informs the decision-making process.

Established last year, this task force is a partnership between federal, state, and local agencies and Tribal governments tasked with coordinating renewable energy planning activities on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) in the Gulf of Mexico. It serves as a forum to discuss stakeholder issues, obtain data, exchange information about ocean resources, and facilitate collaboration opportunities.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting, which will include an opportunity for public input. The meeting will take place virtually. More information can be found
here.

BOEM is currently in the process of preparing a draft environmental assessment (EA) to consider the impacts of potential offshore wind leasing in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The area that will be reviewed in the EA includes almost 30 million acres just west of the Mississippi River to the Texas/Mexican border. BOEM will narrow the area based on stakeholder and ocean user input before advancing any Wind Energy Areas. The draft EA is expected to be completed in the coming months.
