Borssele Beta ready for sail-out

The Borssele Beta offshore substation topside has been loaded onto a barge for installation in mid-March. Sail away is expected on the 16th March according to industry sources.

The topside forms part of the Borssele Beta offshore grid connection project which is to be operated by Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT. It will link up with turbines in the Borssele 3&4 offshore wind areas of the Dutch North Sea. The topside weighs 3,700 tonnes with dimensions of 58x32x26 m. It converts power from 66 kV to 220 kV with a total capacity of 700 MW.

After installation, the hook-up, commissioning and trial operations will commence, with completion expected in August 2020. HSM Offshore was contracted for the full EPCI scope of the substation with Seaway Strashnov to carry out the installation. It is to be installed the on a 37 metre high jacket foundation which was installed which weights around 2950 tonnes. It is expected to be be completed by the end of 2020.

The Borssele 3&4 offshore wind farm is being built 22 kilometres off the coast of the Province of Zeeland, and will be one of the largest Dutch offshore wind farms. Van Oord is performing Balance of Plant activities, consisting of the engineering, supply and construction of the foundations and connecting cables. Borssele 3&4, also known as Blauwwind, is a 731.5 MW development that will consist of 77 MHI Vestas V164-9.5 MW turbines. Commercial production is expected in early 2021.

The project is backed by a consortium including Partners Group (45%), Shell (20%), DGE (15%), Eneco Group (10%), and Van Oord (10%). Van Oord is responsible for the Balance of Plant for the project, covering of the engineering, procurement, and construction of the foundations and inter array cables.
