BorWin Gamma transmitting power

Petrofac has announced that the BorWin Gamma offshore platform in the German North Sea has started to transmit power. Operated by Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT, the 900 MW project will convert three-phase electric power generated by offshore wind farms into direct current and transmit it 160km back to shore.

The 18,000 tonne topside was installed in October 2018, using a  "float-over-process". This meant that during installation the platform was pulled over the jacket foundation and was positioned precisely. It was then ballasted using water to lower the structure onto the foundation.

Petrofac and Siemens, in consortium, were awarded the main contract for the offshore grid connection project contract by TenneT in 2014. The jacket foundation was fabricated by Heerema Fabrication Group. The jacket foundation was installed in May 2018, and the topside integrated in October 2018 following its sea voyage from Dubai where it was fabricated and the completion of a mammoth float-over installation procedure.

George Salibi, Chief Operating Officer – Engineering & Construction at Petrofac said: “We are delighted to have reached this key milestone with BorWin3 ready for action. The additional grid connection being put into operation is a significant contribution to the energy transition in Germany and a further demonstration of Petrofac’s expansion into adjacent sectors, including renewable energy.”

In total, a distance of 160 kilometres is being bridged, whereby the wind power is first transported over a 130 kilometre long submarine cable to the west of Borkum to Hamswehrum and, from there, over a 30 kilometre long underground cable to Emden/East. One of the projects to use the connections is the
Hohe See project, which is currently under construction.

BorWin3 is the third project to be realigned by TenneT in DC technology off the coast of Borkum, after the
BorWin1 and BorWin2 grid connection projects.
