Construction is well underway at the Kincardine floating offshore wind farm, located 15 km offshore from the Scottish coast of Aberdeen in water depths ranging between 60 and 80 metres.

The 50 MW project comprises of five MHI Vestas V164 9.6MW turbines  on semi-submersible floating structures designed by Principle Power. An initial 2 MW turbine was also installed in 2018.

The second floating wind turbine (KIN-04) is now moored in its operational location. Additional work will be continuing for the commissioning of the turbine, requiring regular crew boat transfers on a daily basis.

Each turbine has to be towed from Holland, where the turbines are being mounted onto the foundations, to the wind farm site. The route is 480 nmi long, and takes 9 or 10 days,

The first floating turbine (KIN-03) was installed earlier this year and is currently being hooked up to the export cable and commissioned. The vessel MANTA is preforming the mooring hook up, the Princess is performing the tow escort and Global Symphony is undertaking the export cable connection.

Between Christmas & New Year, the Global Offshore team aboard the NKT Victoria departed Aberdeen to provide support with ongoing cable installation work. According to Global Offshore the inter array cables are due to be installed in Q2 2021.

Commissioning of the wind farm is expected this Summer. Upon completion, it will be one of the world’s largest floating wind projects to-date and is expected to generate up to 218GWh of clean electricity a year – enough to power approximately 55,000 Scottish households.
