COBRA transformers arrive in Eemshaven

TenneTTransformers for the COBRAcable interconnector project have arrived at the converter station site in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The transformers were manufactured by Siemens at its facility in Nuremberg, Germany and transported to Eemshaven via a specialised trailer and transportation barge.

The converter station is being constructed by Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT and will be used to export and integrate energy into the German national grid. Energinet.dk is building a similar converter station in Endrup in Denmark.

The interconnector project will have a 700MW capacity and be approximately 325km in length, running from Eemshaven (the Netherlands) to Endrup (Denmark) via the German sector of the North Sea. The connection will be constructed as a High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable, since the use of DC technology minimises transmission losses over long distances.

The project is expected to create benefits for the Netherlands and Denmark. Both countries will be able to import and export electricity in periods of high and low demand. Furthermore, the project is designed in such a way that a wind farm at sea can be connected at a later stage.

The COBRAcable is a cross-border project of European significance and the European Commission has therefore allocated a subsidy to this project under the EU Economic Recovery Plan. It is expected to be operation from the second half of 2019.

COBRAcable is not the first subsea electricity connection constructed by TenneT. In 2008 the transmission system operator completed the 700MW NorNed cable between the Netherlands and Norway which is 580km long. This was followed in 2011 by the BritNed cable between the Netherlands and the UK which has a capacity of 1,000 MW and covers a distance of 260km.

In addition to COBRAcable, TenneT is currently also working on the NordLink project, a 1.4GW subsea cable link between Germany and Norway that is expected to be completed in 2020.
