Construction continues at Borssele V

Turbines installation is underway at Borssele V innovation project. Van Oord's vessel Aeolus is now on site having just finished turbine installation at Borssele 3&4.

Borssele V, located 20 km off the coast of the Netherlands, has been designated as an innovation site. Two Towers, consisting of Van Oord, Investri Offshore and Green Giraffe are developing the project to test and demonstrate new technologies.

Two Towers intends to implement an innovative 'split joint' clamping connection solution between the foundation and tower. This technology, developed in collaboration with Van Oord, offers an alternative to flanged or grouted connections and is expected to be maintenance-free, and reduce installation time. The consortium will also use innovative aluminium-based protection coating (TSA), which ensures a higher life expectancy of the mast and requires less maintenance will be tested. Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) monitoring system and an oval cable hole will also be deployed at the site.

Furthermore, new eco-designs for scour protection will be tested to determine effects on the maritime environment. This includes the use of scour protection in creating reef systems, such as oyster reefs, which are designed to help promote a healthy and diverse marine ecosystem.

The site will feature two V164-9.5 MW turbines on monopile foundations manufactured by Sif. Aeolus installed the foundations earlier this year.

This week also saw commissioning of the Borssele 1&2 wind farm and completion of turbine installation at Borssele 3&4. The Dutch government aims to increase the installed offshore wind capacity to 4.5 GW by 2023 across the Borssele, Hollandse Kust Zuid and Hollandse Kust Noord wind energy areas.
