Contstruction order signed for Chinese SOV

A contract for the construction of what is said to be China's first Service Operations Vessel (SOV), was signed during a design review meeting for the vessel. The SWATH (Small Water Area Twin Hull) design vessel will provide optimum performance when providing operations and maintenance support on offshore wind farms. The ship will adopt the design concept of Z-type propulsion plus semi-slip gearbox for the first time.

The vessel will be purpose built by the Wuhu Shipyard for Guangdong Offshore Wind Power Operations and Maintenance Co., Ltd. Five top domestic and overseas offshore wind power operation and maintenance ship design teams, including the 702 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Group and Ulstein, presented the design plan to the conference. The presentations were followed by discussions supporting the development of the SOV for China's offshore wind sector.
The conference recognised that at present, there is still a large gap between domestic Chinese offshore wind power operation and maintenance technology and European high-end technology. The number of professional operation and maintenance ships is lacking. Vessels used in the sector mainly consist of converted fishing vessels and transportation vessels, and their safety, speed, loading and unloading capabilities are poor.

The new ship can complete the boarding and operation tasks on a wind farm at a meaningful wave height of more than 3m. The vessel specification will include new technology such as power batteries and telescopic propellers. As offshore accommodation, the SOV will provide a high standard of comfort to the crew and technicians on board. with a reading room, games room, gym and other humanistic functional facilities,
