Copenhagen Energy has released details for the third of its four offshore wind farms planned for Commonwealth and State waters off Western Australia. Details of the Samphire Offshore Wind Farm have been submitted to Federal regulatory authorities and released for public comment.

The project will comprise up to 200 turbines and six substation platforms in Commonwealth waters delivering 3GW of renewable electricity, enough to power three million homes and businesses, for up to 50 years.

Subsea export cables through State waters will connect the wind farm to a transfer station on land at a site between 60km and 120km north of Perth.

The Samphire Offshore Wind Farm proposal follows the
Leeuwin Offshore Wind Farm proposed within Commonwealth waters off the coast between Mandurah and Bunbury, and the Midwest Offshore Wind Farm, proposed within Commonwealth waters off the coast near Kalbarri.

Proposals for the three projects have been submitted to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water for initial assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Copenhagen Energy’s fourth project, Velella Offshore Wind Farm, will also be submitted to DCCEEW.

Under the Samphire proposal, turbines will be constructed from 10km to 44km offshore between Lancelin and Two Rocks within a project area up to 700km2.

According to Copenhagen Energy, modelling indicates that for every 1GW of power, the Samphire Offshore Wind Farm will create 14,500 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and 200 jobs during operation.

Copenhagen Energy Chief Executive Officer Jasmin Bejdic commented: “Offshore wind farms will deliver new jobs, green energy, and help Australia reach its carbon emission targets".

Bejdic added: “WA is uniquely well positioned to harness wind energy, particularly from offshore wind farms, with Perth being ranked the third windiest city in the world.

“The release of our Samphire proposal is just the start of a long process that will involve comprehensive studies to understand the environmental, economic, and social impacts of our project.

“As with our other projects, we are talking to a range of local, State and Federal government agencies and local community, tourism, and fishing groups about our project and how we can develop it successfully.”

Pending approvals, Copenhagen Energy aims to start construction of its Samphire project in 2029.
