Could Shell CEO merge renewables and low-carbon division?

Shell appears to be considering changes to its renewables and low-carbon division as part of CEO Wael Sawan's plans to potentially improve the company's returns. Some sources suggest the oil giant is 'muting' its renewable energy focus, which could fuel big changes within the industry.

There are indications that the global role of executive vice president for renewable generation, held by Thomas Brostrom, could be eliminated, and that the wind and solar power businesses may report to Executive Vice President Steve Hill.

Additionally, there is talk that Anna Mascolo could be named executive vice president for low carbon products and sectors, reporting to Huibert Vigeveno, who heads the downstream and renewables division.

These potential changes were first reported by Bloomberg. Sawan had previously announced plans to combine the oil and gas production and liquefied natural gas (LNG) divisions and place the renewables business in the downstream division, indicating a possible shift towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades while aiming to  improve the company's performance.
