The Energy Regulatory Commission France (CRE) has launched a public consultation on the 1.4 GW GridLink project. CRE will discuss with stakeholders the possibility of building another interconnection between the UK and France, amid uncertain UK and EU relationships.

Currently, the UK and France share 3 GW of interconnections, through the 2 GW
IFA and 1 GW IFA2 links. In addition, the 1 GW ElecLink is already under construction and scheduled to commission in 2022, while three new links of 4.8 GW cumulative capacity (1.4 GW FABLink, 1.4 GW Gridlink and 2 GW Aquind) are under consideration.

Looking at the cost-benefit analysis of a new link, and major uncertainties rising from the UK and EU relations, CRE would preliminary advise to wait for stable economic and political relations, prior to initiating any new interconnection project between France and the United Kingdom.

Interested parties and stakeholders are invited to respond to this public consultation by 26th July 2021.

The 525 kV
Gridlink has already obtained planning permission from Medway Council for the construction of the converter station and associated works at Kingsnorth in Kent UK, and initiated a tender for site preparation works for a converter station in Kent, UK, in April 2021. GridLink has also applied for Environmental Authorisation and Maritime Public Area Utilisation Rights in France, and the decision on the application is expected in Q1-2022. The 160 km interconnector is scheduled to go online by 2025.
