CRE reveals Dunkerque strike price

The French Energy Regulatory Commission (la Commission de régulation de l'énergie, CRE) has revealed that the Dunkerque offshore wind farm will have a strike price of EUR 44/MWh. CRE recently issued the rights to the site to a consortium of EDF Renouvelables, Enbridge and innogy following a competitive tender procedure.

The 600 MW project is expected feature 45 turbines with offshore construction anticipated to start in 2024. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2025 and will cover a 70km2 area, some 10km offshore Dunkirk.

The revelation follows news last week that the French Prime Minister Edouaed Philippe has plans for France to double down on its targets for offshore wind installation. The announcement was part of the Prime Minister's speech on Wednesday (12th June 2019) to the National Assembly. The Prime Minster stated that tenders for 1GW a year are expected to take place until 2028. It follows cost reductions seen in the Dunkerque offshore wind farm tender process.

The Prime Minister also stated plans to shut down the Fessenheim power station before the end of 2020 and to reduce the share of nuclear power to 50% by 2035. Furthermore, by the end of the year, the government aims to finalise ecological transition contracts in Gardanne, Saint Avold, Cordemais and Le Havre, where coal-fired power plants will be closed by 2022. To make up for the shortfall of power generation, the government is looking to the development of renewable energy, particularly wind power.
