CSBC-DEME joint venture inks Taiwan contract

A joint venture of Taiwan International Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and DEME Group, CSBC-DEME Wind Engineering Co., Ltd. (CDWE), has signed a contract with Copenhagen Infrastructure Construction Fund (CIP) for two offshore wind projects off the Taiwan coast. The two companies formed the joint venture back in 2017 in an effort to target the Asia-Pacific offshore wind market.

The contract covers the transportation and installation of turbines for two offshore wind farms,
ChangFang and Xidao. Construction of both projects is currently slated for 2021 with operations scheduled for 2023. The projects are located located 13-15 km off the coast of Changhua County.

CIP is developing multiple projects off the coast of Taiwan and has invested in numerous offshore wind farms across Europe, including
Beatrice which was recently commissioned off the coast of Scotland and Star of the South, being developed off the Australian coast.

CIP recently established a new fund, Copenhagen Infrastructure New Markets Fund I K/S (CI NMF I), which will invest in renewable energy infrastructure targeting economies primarily in Asia and Latin America. The fund is expected to achieve its final close with total commitments of approximately USD 1 billion within the next nine months.

Taiwan holds strong potential for renewable energies, with its positive government outlook. After deciding to phase out nuclear power by 2025 – with nuclear energy accounting for some 40% of power generation in the past – the Taiwanese government aims to make up for the resulting shortfall by expanding renewable energies, especially offshore wind power. The government aims to install 5.5GW of offshore wind power by 2025.
