DEA seeks feedback on expanded Bornholm Energy Island plans

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and Energinet have invited potential tenderers and relevant industry associations to participate in market dialogue concerning the upcoming procurements for the establishment the Bornholm Energy Island.

Denmark is planning to connect future offshore wind farms via energy islands which act offshore transmission hubs and distribute it to the electricity grid in Denmark as well as directly to other countries. An artifical island in the North Sea will initially connect 3 GW and later expanded to 10 GW. The island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea will also act as an energy island and connect at least 2 GW.

There are ongoing political negotiations about whether the capacity of the Bornholm offshore wind farms should be increased up to 3 GW and the wind farm will be allowed to be located up to 15 kilometres from the shore. The onshore substation will be located approximately one kilometre south of Nylars, Lodbæk and Aakirkeby.

The Bornholm Energy Island is to be the first project to be completed, scheduled for 2030. The capacity can rise up to 3.8 GW, if overplanting will be allowed. The possible capacity from overplanting can, on private initiative, be used by the concessionaire for e.g. Power-to-X (PtX).

During the market dialogue, the most important topics will be discussed with potential tenderers and other actors in the offshore wind industry. The dialogue gives the industry a possibility to affect the framework of the upcoming Bornholm Energy Island offshore wind farm.

The market dialogue will address the timetable for the offshore wind farm near the Bornholm Energy Island and preliminary site investigations nearby.

The DEA and Energinet are also seeking feedback on the bidding zone design for Denmark’s energy islands, support mechanism and possibility for overplanting and PtX. Its onshore substation and grid connection will also be discussed.

The main event will be held on 30th August 2022 and individual meetings between 1st and 9th September 2022. All the meetings will be held in Copenhagen at Carsten Niebuhrs Gade 43, 1577 Copenhagen V. It will also be possible to have the meetings as a virtual meeting.

Participants in the market dialogue are invited to consider the questions posed but are also welcome to send input related to themes not mentioned in this material. Written comments or questions to the DEA and Energinet should be sent by no later than 12th of September 2022.

Those interested are required to register participation no later than 18th August 2022.
