Eight extensions to be assessed

Since February 2017 when the opportunity launched, eight applications have been received, representing potential for up to 3GW of new capacity on the seabed around England and Wales.

The Crown Estate will now embark on assessing the applications. Given the presence of multiple applications, it will also consider the need for a plan level Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA).

Subject to the outcome of these processes, successful applications could be converted to option agreements in summer 2019.

The Crown Estate announced in November 2017 that it would be working with the offshore wind sector and stakeholders to consider a process for making new seabed rights available to offshore wind developers.

The Crown Estate says closure of the extensions opportunity helps pave the way for a single and comprehensive route for awarding new rights for future offshore wind development on the seabed around England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Will Apps, Head of Energy Development at The Crown Estate said: “Extension projects have the potential to make an important contribution to the UK’s offshore wind pipeline, in line with the sector’s growing ambitions and in advance of potential new leasing. Over the coming months we will work closely with the successful applicants and our stakeholders to ensure careful consideration of environmental impacts and existing seabed users interests, ahead of any award of rights.”

Currently there is 7.1GW of operational offshore wind capacity in the UK, with a further 2.6GW under construction and a further 3.6GW that will be built by 2024.
