EOLOS has deployed its FLS200 floating LiDAR buoy under contract with Royal Dutch Shell, 60km off the coast of Ulsan, South Korea.

EOLOS was elected by Shell to provide the turn-key services of a floating LiDAR campaign for wind resource and met-ocean measuring. The project, with water depths of 150m, takes EOLOS into a new region and deeper waters, in what is expected to be a harsh environment for the measurement campaign ahead.

EOLOS Sales Director, Julian Harland described the project as “a prestigious project award for EOLOS, raising the profile of our ability to secure complex projects, in this case under the eye of an internationally recognised client who has one of the most respected health & safety mindsets in the sector”.

Henrik Baltscheffsky, CEO of Hexicon AB and Director of CoensHexicon Co., Ltd, “An aspect that particularly I appreciate is the local vendors that EOLOS has partnered with and is working with during the project execution and will continue to do so during their operation and maintenance campaigns.  Engaging with local stakeholders fosters trust and is coherent with our own development strategy here and in the region.”

South Korea currently around has around 100 MW of offshore wind in operation, with a target of 12 GW by 2030. Around 7 GW of projects due to enter construction before the end of the decade, but there is mounting interest in floating wind off the south coast where wind resources are stronger.

Jeonnam Development Council is planning to auction up to two areas around Sinan for ~2 GW of floating wind development in 2021. Ulsan has also been vying to become a floating wind farm hub.

Last year Shell signed an joint development agreement with CoensHexicon to develop, construct and operate a floating wind farm approximately 40 km offshore from the Metropolitan City of Ulsan, South Korea. Initial project development started early 2019 and is being led by CoensHexicon.

CoensHexicon Co Ltd was established in 2018 by the South Korean service provider Coens Co., Ltd based in Busan, Korea and the Swedish developer of twin turbine foundations Hexicon AB. CoensHexicon aims to target the emerging South Korean offshore wind market in deeper waters utilising its twin turbine foundation concept.

Hexicon AB, based in Stockholm, Sweden is a developer of floating wind farm. Established in 2009, the company developed a two turbine foundation concept which aims to produce power in deeper waters. It is in the process of developing the Dounreay Tri off the coast of Scotland. With a capacity of 10 MW it will feature two turbines mounted on one semi-submersible foundation.

Shell is in the process of developing its offshore wind portfolio with interests in the
Blauwwind, Egmond aan Zee and Hollandse Kust Noord wind farms off the Dutch coast. It is also a 50% shareholder in Atlantic Shores in New Jersey that is working to develop an offshore lease area capable of generating 2.5 GW of power and a 50% shareholder in the Mayflower consortium, which is working to develop a 1.6 GW lease area off the coast of Massachusetts, USA.
